Letter from U.S. Student

My name is Heather and I love to write. I especially love writing for other people. And when it is a person in need, I am way more motivated to write a good piece of literature. I was very excited to write a book for the program you developed. I had the pleasure of writing a Book of Hope to a lovely child in Uganda. I think this program is really amazing. I love seeing people care for their fellow man. It brings a smile to my face and warmth to my heart. I cannot believe how much some people care when the rest of the world is surrounded by a mean darkness. You bring a light to some of that darkness. Everyone needs that kind of light in their life, especially when the rest of it has been darkness. You are a role model to many people. I know you love doing what you do, and I hope only once again the near future, I will be able to help people to the extent you have.

Sincerely,
Heather V.

If you would like to send us a brief paragraph about your experience with the project, please drop us a line at info@booksofhope.org

Books of Hope is a service-learning program where U.S. schools select a sister school abroad and create books to help meet the students' educational needs. We provide teachers with information about their sister school and instructional materials to help facilitate the project. Along with writing, illustrating and binding books, schools also have the option of raising funds and collecting and sending other supplies for their sister school.

Books of Hope is an ideal way to incorporate service into practically any unit of any classroom at any level. We encourage schools to create books about science, math, geography, reading readiness, English grammar, and a whole variety of other topics.

Over 50,000 students, teachers, parents and community members from over 1000 schools across the country have been involved in Books of Hope. During the 2008-9 school year, we collected over 14,000 pounds of books and donated supplies.

    * To support literacy in U.S. schools by motivating students to read and write for an audience of their peers who will value their work.

    * To foster empathy and social responsibility in American students by providing an effective way for them to learn about and make a difference in the lives of children facing war, poverty, disease, and slavery around the world.
